To prevent DVT and pulmonary embolism after surgery, there are several preventative measures that hospitals can take with their patients. They may force you to wear compression stockings or wear a pneumatic compression sleeve that provides intermittent pressure. You may also have to take a blood thinner or anticoagulant to help prevent your blood from clotting. Lastly, some procedures require movement soon after surgery to help get your blood pumping. Doctors should start you on a physical therapy track as soon as you are able to protect you from blood clots.

From surgery, your leg will be encased in an anti-embolism device known as inflatable pneumatic compression stockings. These cuts down the risk of blood blot formation which can occur after surgery on the lower limbs.
