The traditional and official rule is that men's socks should be of the same color as that of the pants or shoes but many like patterns of different colors and or hues of various designs. White socks are not preferred and should be strictly reserved for the gym and sports attire only.

The color and length of the socks would greatly depend on the occasion and the color of pants you would like to wear them with. For formal clothes, it is important that the shade of the socks should match the trouser color. For casual and sports wear, a lot depends on your personal style. Most people like to match their socks with their jeans or shorts, while others conveniently stick to the basic black and grey colors. If you wish to be daring though, you can select contrasting men's socks colors too.
