Choosing which coloured socks to wear should be aligned with the event to be attended. For very formal events, such as black-tie events, the ideal choice of color would be black ones. Black coloured socks go well with dark suits, such as those of the shades of dark blue, navy, and black.

Socks with shorts? It's a big no. It violates the rules of sock etiquette. But, if you really want to wear socks try ankle length ones which do not peep out from your sneakers. And please avoid socks with sandals as well. It reflects an immature look.
