Cotton is the most common material for children's socks. It is made out of natural fiber so it's very lightweight and comfortable. Very few people are allergic to this material, since it is all natural and chemical free. It is quite breathable, so bacteria do not settle and thus avoid odors. Cotton is sustainable. When already deemed wearable from constant use, you can help by giving them away-manufacturing companies can recycle the socks to produce more cotton. However, cotton is highly absorbent. Be wary of rains and puddles of water because such may cause the cotton socks to become wet. This would make the socks uncomfortable to wear for they dry very slowly.

Cotton Socks

Cotton socks which are the most common to wear will absorb the sweat and hold it in for much longer periods of time. This will cause your feet to remain moist all day. When inside of a shoe, this will cause all sorts of bacteria to grow and cause the unsavory foot odor. Some swear by cotton socks helping the problem, but they aren't as breathable and don't dry as fast as they need to.

Wool socks seem to be a better option than cotton when it comes to wicking away moisture. The issue that wool socks have is that they are much more uncomfortable than cotton socks. They also tend to be a bit warmer and hold in more heat which can cause more sweat. If you do try wool socks for your foot problem, get the thin ones as opposed to the thick ones meant for winter.
